Final Reflective Letter

Through the semester I have learned many things. Mainly what a hero can be, the hero’s journey, the monomyth, archetypes and that theres no wrong way to write a poem.

The structure of the wourse was nice. I like writing on these blogs then having to type and print everything out and bring it to class everyday and we always have the opportunity to look at our classmate’s work that they have accomplished and have our feedback on theirs and recieve in return. I also enjoyed how we sat in a circle and discussed what we were talking about everyday.

Our instructor for this course was so easy going and understanding. Without him having the personality he had I would have dreaded this course. But because he was also so happy and laughing and young so he understands us, and I was able to relate to him more then any other professor Ive had here.

I enjoyed watching alll the films we did in class because it was very easy to relate to what was going on in the class with the movies bcause we understand them.

However I think we wrote way too many poems. By the end of the semester you were so worn out and kept running of ideas to write about. I think if we didn’t have to write so many I would have felt I worked on the poems more instead of just doing them half assed half the time. The reading wasn’t terrible. Some books were boring and others you could read right through. I would hve cut it down to 4 books instead of 6 because we do have other classes that need reading to and it felt like I spent all my free time reading instead of relaxing.

All in all this semester innglish 121 was a blast and i am gonna miss it. i had a great time and met a lot of new friends since we were able to interact with our classmates more. have a great summer everyone! =]

Midterm Reflective Letter

In this course I have learned in great detail about the hero’s journey. I have learned about all the stages of the monomyth and where I stand in the monomyth journey. I also am well-grounded about who my hero is in my life, how I am a hero to others and that being a hero can be something else then what you see in movies. I have also been educated on all the types of archetypes in life and where I also stand in that category and how to pick them out of every book and every movie you read and watch.

I believe that the course structure is great. Monday and Wednesday classes are a good time to quickly read through some things and then have a whole weekend to do a bigger portion of things. I love the fact that Marlen is younger and he can actually relate to us. Showing us modern things like spiderman and star wars really helps because you understand that, so comparing things is much easier.

However, there is a terrible amount of reading to do. We could have cut back with at the most 5 books. I find myself reading all the time and it’s hard to do so much reading when i have hard classes that i really should spend more time studying for. Other than that, this course has given me a great amount of knowledge of figuring out who i am and where i am in my life. =]
